What’s the difference between laser hunting and golf range finders?

I want to get a laser range finder for my first elk hunt but don't have much cash. I got a shot at getting a Bushnell X500 golf laser range finder for really cheap but need to know if it will work for getting range on elk/deer/pig for longer shots like even up to 3-400 yds if necessary.
